Selecting Cookware Material for Gas Stove

Finding the best pots and pans for gas stoves starts with the material it is made out of.

Gas stoves use a flame as the heat source.  Because of this, they offer quick temperature control and are becoming more and more popular due to the cost effectiveness.

One of the perks of a gas stove is that the cook can easily see how much heat is coming out, based on the flame.  This is much harder to gauge when using an electric stove or induction cooktop.

Most any cookware could be used on a gas stove.  But for the best outcome and longevity of your investment, it’s wise to stick to cookware that can handle the flame of a gas stove.

Since disbursement of equal heat from a flame is less predictable, an important feature when selecting the best cookware for your gas stove is how the heat is disbursed.

You will want to make sure the cookware is made with materials that conduct heat evenly.

There are three main materials that work best with gas stoves.

Copper is lightweight, which makes it easy to handle.  It is also known as a material that allows cookware to heat evenly. When selecting copper cookware, make sure to get a set that is lined with another material, like stainless steel, to avoid unnecessary copper exposure.

Aluminum is an easy to access metal, which is oftentimes why we see kitchen utensils and cookware made out of it.  It is not quite as durable as stainless steel but it does heat up quickly and usually evenly. This makes it a great choice for cookware on a gas stove.

Stainless Steel

The most durable of the three materials, stainless steel is a common go to material when cooking with a gas stove. This low maintenance material can withstand tough use  without resulting in nicks or breaks.  However, if not properly oiled, food is known to stick to it, making it more difficult to clean.

The best pots and pans for gas stoves are often made up of mixed materials.  For example, copper + stainless steel.  Or aluminum + stainless steel.  These hybrid options are a great way to go when making your gas stove cookware selection.

Benefits of a Gas Stove

If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen or are building a new home, you may need to decide whether you want an electric or gas stove. When making this decision, there are several factors to consider.

We’ve had both gas and electric stoves and we prefer a gas stove.  Below are some of the pros to choosing a gas stove:

Heats up quickly

Since the flame is the heat source, you get instant heat from a gas stove

Immediate (and more) temperature control

A quick turn of the know and you will have instant higher heat or lower heat

Stove top is easier to clean

Many electric stoves have a glass top that requires special cleaner and cleaning with a more delicate approach.  A gas stove can withstand more aggressive cleaning. We use the simple baking soda and water solution mentioned below and it works great.

Cheaper to run than electric range

While gas stoves tend to run higher in price up front, the cost savings comes with your monthly energy bill.  Running a stove on gas is typically cheaper than running in on electricity.

Gas Stove Top Cooking and Cookware Q&A

Below are the frequently asked questions related to gas stove cooking and miscellaneous cookware questions.

How do you clean a gas stove top?

While cleaning a gas stove top can involve a few more steps, when compared to an electric stove top,  it can be broken down into simple, easy to follow steps.

To clean your gas stove top burners and caps, simply remove them from the stove top and allow them to soak in warm soapy water for at least 30 minutes. Use a non abrasive scrub pad and/or an old toothbrush to scrub away grime, grease and buildup.

For hard to clean grease stains, sprinkle on a full coverage layer of baking soda then top it with drops of hydrogen peroxide.  It should have the consistency of paste.

Allow the mixture to set for about 10 minutes, then use a non abrasive scrub pad to wipe the mixture away. Repeat as needed, until the stain is gone.

Cleaning the stove top starts with a simple wipe down all across the surface. For built up grease, use the same baking soda + hydrogen peroxide mixture mentioned above.

What types of kitchenware should not be used on a gas stove?

Most brands offer cookware that is safe and suitable for a gas stove. If you are ever in doubt, read the full description of the product and it will usually say what kinds of stoves the cookware is suitable for.

That said, for safety reasons, make sure the bottom of the cookware covers the entire flame of the gas stove. You don’t want fire to escape from under the cookware.

All cooking utensils should be anti-corrosive and non-inflammable.  Plastic, melamine and glass utensils should all be avoided when cooking on a gas stove.

Additionally, for aesthetic reasons, you may want to stick with a cookware set that can withstand the flames.  Oftentimes, it is best to stay away from cookware that has bight or light colors.

Can Cast Iron Pots and Pans be used on a gas stove?

Cast Iron is one of my favorite materials to cook with.  There’s something about the experience that takes me to a place of sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows.

While cast iron can be used to cook on a gas stove, there are a few guidelines to follow that will ensure a positive experience.

Allow the cast iron pan to preheat over the flame for about 10 minutes. Lift it up and rotate it every so often as it is preheating. Never touch a bare hot cast iron handle.  It can cause severe burns. Always use a protective cookware glove that fits the handle of your cast iron pan.

Cast iron holds plenty of heat, so you will not need to turn the burner too high. Medium temperatures work great.

Avoid the temptation to shake the pan back and forth or move it around a lot to flip vegetables, etc… doing this may cause scratching to your gas grates.

Allow the cast iron to cool completely before removing it from the stove top.  Since it holds heat so well, it’s better to be safe than sorry and allowing it to cool before removing will help prevent burn marks on your countertop and mitigate potential damage to your sink.

Best Pots and Pans for Gas Stoves

Can you use non stick pans on gas stoves?

Yes!  Many of the recommended best cookware for gas stove options above feature a non stick surface. When possible, I always recommend going with a cookware set that is non stick

As a best practice, cook over low to medium heat to make the non stick surface last longer.

Can enamelware be used on gas stoves?

Enamelware is essentially cast iron with a layer of enamel coated on the outside. This layer helps prevent rust and assists to evenly distribute heat.

It is safe to use on a gas stove and is best to heat to low or medium temperatures.  It can also take a bit more time to heat up, so be patient!

Best Pots and Pans for Gas Stoves Conclusion

Selecting the perfect cookware set that fits your needs and budget is well within reach.

Always go with a brand that has good reviews and plenty of them.  With so many new brands popping up everyday, the choice selection can feel overwhelming.

Just be sure to stick to the basics of choosing the correct cookware material, then decide if you want to go with non stick or not.

Take note of what you cook and how many people you usually cook for to help determine what size of cookware set you will need.

I’ve been guilty of purchasing the ultimate set before then ending up using only about half of what came in the set.  Now, I’m more diligent with purchasing only what I will actually use.

Buying through most brick and mortar or online stores today is safe and fairly risk free.  Always double check the stores return policy just in case the cookware set you buy ends up not working out.
